Adopt A Newbie? Chances you stumbled across this thread because you're new , you're curious about what this is, or you want to volunteer in this program. However, if you were directed to this thread, then chances are you were suggested to perk up on your role playing skills. No worries, though, here you pick who helps you. We don't mind if you can only post a few small paragraphs, or even if it's a few lines: That's what we're here for. These "tutoring lessons" are quite self explanatory. Members listed below are all members who have volunteered in helping out new members find their way around. Their main goal is to help you become a better writer, but are also here to answer questions and generally help you out in any way they can. Adopting A Newbie How does this work out? Well, below is a list of members who have volunteered to help out. In our form, we try to gather knowledge about the strengths, weaknesses, and general personality. This way you may find someone best suited to your personality. When you find someone you believe is suitable to help you improve, all you have to do is fill out the form below. As annoying as it is, this way we can keep organized and decide on a mentor, as in some cases one of the volunteers might already have someone to help out. Please be aware, although we are here to help you, this is still a volunteer basis. We ask that new members be polite and respectful for those who are willing to take time out of their daily life in order to help you improve. If you have any questions about the process, about a promising mentor, or you feel that you may better improve under a different mentor, feel free to post in the thread or send a staff member a Personal Message. Newbie FormPreferred Name: What do you prefer to go by? Activity: How active are you, daily (in and out of school)? Role Playing Experience: An estimate of your experience is alright. Mentor Of Choice: Who is your preferred mentor? 2nd Mentor Of Choice: If that mentor is too busy, who would be your second choice? Goals: What are the results you are hoping to achieve from applying to this program? Available MentorsCompleted volunteer forms will be posted here along with newbies they are already tutoring.
Becoming A Mentor So, you've decided you're capable in helping out a new player? That's great! However, please be aware before signing up that you must be dedicated. As much as you might want to help, ask yourself these questions first: Are you active daily? Can you control the length and quality of your posts? Do you accept the fact that your tutoring might not help as much as you'd like? If you thought no to any of these, unfortunately, chances are you aren't exactly fitted in becoming a mentor a new player. Although becoming a mentor to a newbie may not suit you, please remember there are always many other things you may be doing to help out Shelpey Alley and its community. If you answered yes to those questions, then you're well on your way to becoming a volunteer mentor to a new member. Before moving on, we ask all future volunteers, new or old, to remember that these are new players. Although some may not be able to write as well as you, as a mentor, you must remember to be patient, polite, and respectful. If it turns out your pupil has decided they might be better off with a new mentor (or you might think that), do not be offended. There are always new players, and in the mean time, as previously said there are always other ways to help out Shelpey Alley. Lastly, remember as you fill out the volunteer form that honesty is stressed here. If you have any questions about the process, about a newbie's progress, or you feel that you may not be best suited to your newbie, feel free to post in the thread or send a staff member a Personal Message. I'm no good at making official threads unless it's about rules. XP Should we keep the forms or not? I'm not a big fan of them (but I don't mind them), but I feel this might become popular and might be needed (especially in the case of newbies?). Also, it helps the newbies and volunteers show information that's looked for. Example form: Preferred Name: My most well-known name is Toki, although I go by many nicknames. I don't mind what I'm called as long as it's not offensive. Activity: I'm active daily, whether it be summer or school (of course, with those occasional days in between). Role Playing Experience: I've been role playing since October 2008. Strengths: I'm quite honest, which can sometimes sound brutal, and fairly accepting to anyone. I'm best at detail and spelling in role play. Pet Peeves: I'm a bit annoyed at laziness (ie: not using capitalization in sentences, using "u" as opposed to "you", etc.). I'm also annoyed when someone seems to ignore everything I might suggest, and therefore, not learning. Personality Tidbit: I'm mainly friendly, and for the most part, outgoing. I'm definitely trustworthy as secrets don't leave me once they're told. Many times people come to me to rant and such, which applies to be being more of a listener. As with honesty, I am sometimes blunt which can seem like I'm angry when I'm not. I'm quite hard to anger. Personal Preferences: All I ask is that you attempt to use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling in and out of role play. Newbies At One Time: Two for now, although this may later change.
